- Use a body cream of your favorite fragrance first, then spray on your fragrance. The lotion will act like "glue" and helps hold the fragrance longer.
- For longest results, layer your fragrance all over your body with matching fragrance products such as a shower gel, soap, or bath oil, then a matching lotion or body cream. (If you have dry skin, use a lotion or body cream. If you have oily skin, apply talc.) Follow with matching perfume at the pulse points, or an all-over spritz of eau de parfum.
- Use perfume or eau de parfum (next in strength to perfume.)
- Fragrance rises. Spray or smooth fragrance onto skin from the feet to the shoulders. If you apply fragrance only behind your ears, it will eventually rise and disappear.
- If you have dry skin, you will need to wear more perfume, and re-apply your fragrance more often than someone with oilier skin.
- Wear stronger fragrances in cold weather. Cold reduces a scent's intensity.
- Apply perfume to your primary pulse points (your wrists, behind your ears, your chest, neck, or behind your knees and inside your elbows.)
- Spray the inside of your elbow and behind your knee, for a longer lasting fragrance. The fragrance stays a little moist & fragrance works best just a little bit humid.
- It may be necessary to re-apply your fragrance every 3-4 hours.
- Experiment with different fragrances. Some are longer-lasting than others.
| I don't want to over-do it. How intense should my fragrance be? | - Don't put too much on- your fragrance should be subtle. Your "scent circle" should be about an arm's length from your body. People farther away than that should not be able to smell your fragrance.
- If you find fragrance too cloying, or have allergies to perfume, try just spraying your favorite fragrance onto your hairbrush.
| Why does a fragrance smell differently on me than on my best friend? Everyone's skin chemistry is different. Skin acidity, diet, and hormones all affect a fragrance. | - The biggest factor in how a fragrance will smell on you is your body's PH balance. Ideal PH is alkaline - but stress and poor nutrition will turn your balance to acid, and that will affect fragrance.
- Diet can affect the way a fragrance smells. With high fat, spicy diets, for example, fragrances are more intense. A change in diet can change skin chemistry, causing a fragrance to smell differently.
- Skin type also affects the way a fragrance smells. Fragrances on women with oily skin will have a more intense scent than those with dry skin.
| How should I apply fragrance? | - When using an eau de cologne, eau de toilette, or eau de parfum, you can spray liberally. These versions of fragrance can be used all over, from head to toe.
- Or spray into the air and walk into a cloud of your fragrance. This is a method that insures even application without being too overwhelming.
- Perfume is the most concentrated version of scent. Apply this fragrance at your pulse points (areas on your skin where blood flow is strongest and the skin is warmest): your wrists, behind your ears, your chest, neck, or behind your knees and inside your elbows. Your body warmth will then radiate your fragrance.
- Never rub, because rubbing crushes the molecules of the fragrance & ruins the scent.
| How should I care for my designer fragrances? | - Store fragrance away from direct, bright sunlight, in a cool, dark area (the fridge is great!), with the cap tightly secured. Fragrance oils can turn rancid or evaporate if stored improperly.
- Fragrances can change after a few months, so make sure to not keep them for years - they won't smell like they first did when you bought them.
| What is the difference between cologne, perfume, and eau de toilette? Perfume is composed of fragrant oil extracts diluted in water and high-grade alcohol. Some are more concentrated than others, which determines the level or “strength” of the fragrance, and the lasting power of the scent. Here are the different fragrance levels: | - Cologne – least concentrated (fragrance lasts up to 1 hour)
- Eau de Toilette – concentrated (fragrance lasts up to 2 hours)
- Eau de Parfum – concentrated (fragrance lasts up to 3-4 hours)
- Perfume or Parfum – the most concentrated and longest lasting (fragrance lasts up to 5-6 hours)
| How do I find my own fragrance style? Fragrances reflect the type of person you are. With so many fragrances to choose from, finding the right products is a great way to express your personal style! A special touch of fragrance can make an unforgettable impression on others. | - Experiment with different fragrance families and different fragrance intensities.
- Have different fragrances for different moods - moods change, and your fragrance should, too!
- Don't stick to one fragrance all year long. Temperatures affect the intensity of fragrance.
- For evening, try Eau de Parfum. Eau de Parfum is deeper and richer, lasts longer, and makes your night out much more sensual.
- A fragrance wardrobe should include a variety of fragrances for different occasions.
| Okay- but what are "fragrance families"? Fragrances are generally categorized into fragrance families or aroma groupings. Fragrances for women fall into the following categories: | Floral- The majority of feminine fragrances are in the floral family. Scents include violet, carnation, rose, gardenia, lily of the valley, tuberose and narcissus. Floral perfumes usually include a combination bouquet of different flowers, but some use one predominant flower fragrance along with others, or are simply the scent of one flower alone. The floral family has four subdivisions: fruity/fresh, fruity/sweet, floral/fresh, and floral.
Examples of floral fragrances include: Chanel No 19, Anaïs Anaïs by Cacharel, L'Air du Temps by Nina Ricci, Charlie by Revlon, Always by Avon, Dolce Vita - Dior, Quelques Fleurs by Houbigant, Fleur de Rocaille by Caron, Sun Moon Stars by Lag, Chloe by Karl Lagerfeld, Eternity by Calvin Klein, Gucci Accenti by Gucci, Joy by Jean Patou, White Shoulders by Evyan, and Tuberose in Versace's Blonde. | Floriental- Scents in this family include jasmine, gardenia tangerine, freesia, oamanthus, orange flower, and moon flowers, sandalwood, musk, amber, and apricot. Actually a sub category of the floral family, it is extensive. The perfumes in this family can be worn during the daytime or evening. Examples of floriental fragrances: Joop! Femme by Joop!, Samsara by Guerlain, Sun Moon Stars by Karl Lagerfeld, and Tresor by Lancome | Fruity- Scents in this family include apple, apricot, mandarin, bergamont neroli, passion fruit, pineapple, and papaya.
They have a clean quality. Examples of fruity fragrances: Jess by Jessica McClintock, Lauren by Ralph Lauren, and Liz Claiborne by Liz Claiborne. | Citrus- Scents in this family include lemon, manderine, tangerine, lime, grapefruit, and bergemont. The light and fresh feel of these fragrances are perfect for casual use.
Examples of citrus fragrances: Eau De Rochas by Rochas, and Gieffeffe by Gianfranco Ferre | Chypre- A Chypre fragrance contains earthy, woody, mossy and floral notes. They often include oakmoss, sandalwood, patchouli, bergamot, vetiver, sage, lavender, and resins.
These fragrances are perfect for the outdoor lover. Examples of Chypre fragrances: Cuir de Russe by Chanel, Mitsouko by Guerlain, Chypre de Coty, Halston by Halston FKnowing by Estee Lauder, Miss Dior by Christian Dior, Moments by Priscilla Presley. | Ocean/Marine- Marine fragrances evoke a feeling of ocean spray or mountain air.
Examples of oceanic fragrances: Feminine: Escape by Calvin Klein, Inis by Fragrances of Ireland, Aquawoman by Rochas, Acqua Di Gio by Giorgio Armani, Dune by Christian Dior, Ocean Dream by Giorgio Beverly Hills, and Sunflowers by Elizabeth Arden. | Oriental- Oriental fragrances are warm, spicy and sweet and contain ingredients such as vanilla, tonka bean, amber, vanilla, woods and resins. These scents are heavy, rich, and dramatic and are best for evenings. Examples of Oriental fragrances: Jean Paul Gaultier "Classique", Angel, Opium by Yves Saint Laurent, Imari by Avon, Coco - Chanel , Jicky by Guerlain, Chloe Narcisse by Lagerfeld , Obsession by Calvin Kelin, Samsara by Guerlain, Byzance by Rochas, Black Pearls by Elizabeth Taylor, Casmir by Chopard, and Shalimar by Guerlain
| Greens- Green fragrances are very similar to the florals and chypres. Scents in this family include rosemary, lavender, pine, juniper, hyacinth, and galabanum. Greens evoke the scent of lush forests, greenleaves, fresh cut grass, and meadows. There are two subdivisions in the Green Family, fresh and balsamic. Examples of Green fragrances: Private Collections by Estee Lauder, Fifth Avenue by Elizabeth Arden, Chanel No.19 by Chanel, Gio by Giorgio Armani, Safari by Ralph Lauren, and Sung by Alfred Sung. | Modern- Modern fragrances are mainly composed of synthetic scent chemicals called aldehydes. These scents have a very woody-powdery aroma. There are 2 subdivisions in this family - aldehydic/floral/woody/powdery and aldehydic/floral.
These scents grow stronger as they are warmed by the skin. Examples of Modern fragrances: First by Van Cleef and Arpel, Chanel No.5 by Chanel, Red by Giorgio Beverly Hills, and White Linen by Estee Lauder. | Spicy- Fragrances in this family include cloves, ginger, cinnamon and cardamon and also flowers with a spicy tone to them like carnation and lavender. Examples of spicy fragrances: Coco by Chanel, KL (Lagerfeld) by Karl Lagerfeld, and Poison by Christian Dior | How do I use different fragrance products?
