Symbolism of the Pointsettia

Poinsettias have become symbolic of the Christmas  season both because they resemble the Star of Bethlehem in shape, and because of their festive bright red color.

Legend of the Poinsettia

This legend of the poinsettia comes from Mexico:

 Two children, Maria and her little brother Pablo, were very poor.   Each year, as part of the Christmas festival, a large manger scene was set up in their village church.  And each year, Maria and Pablo wished that they could give something to the church for the Baby Jesus. But they had no money, and nothing to give.

One Christmas Eve, on their way to the Christmas Eve church service, Maria and Pablo picked some weeds growing along the roadside.  They agreed to take them as their gift to the Baby Jesus in the manger scene. When they arrived with their gift, the other children teased them.  But Maria and Pablo had given what they could, and they quietly began placing the green plants around the manger. As they did, miraculously, the green leaves turned into bright red petals.  And soon the manger was surrounded by the beautiful star-like flowers of the poinsettia, as we see it today.
